Waiting until the contract expires and then re-entering is an option, but it involves closing at a potentially disadvantageous price and re-entering in a different market environment. The rollover, executed before expiration, is the standard approach.

The rollover involves two simultaneous transactions: selling the position in the near-month contract and buying an equivalent position in the next-month or next-quarter contract. The roll cost for a long financial futures position in a positive rate environment is the difference between the two prices, which approximates the risk-free rate applied to the contract’s notional value over the additional holding period.

In a backwardated market, particularly common in commodity futures markets when near-term supply is tight, the near-month contract trades above the next-month contract. Rolling a long position forward in this environment generates a roll credit rather than a cost.

For traders managing positions across multiple rollover cycles, the cumulative impact of roll costs or credits is a material component of total return. A long crude oil position held through six months of contango will pay a roll cost at each quarterly or monthly rollover. A position maintained through backwardation receives a credit at each roll.
