A margin call is one of the most operationally disruptive events in a trader’s account. It forces decisions under pressure, at the worst possible moment, in the worst possible market conditions. Most traders who experience one are surprised by it, not because the mechanics were hidden, but because they had not applied the same analytical rigour to their margin exposure as they applied to their trade selection.

 

Margin is the deposit required to open and maintain a leveraged position. It is not the total cost of the position. It is the collateral the broker holds to mitigate the risk that the position will move adversely. Understanding how that requirement is calculated, how it changes when market conditions deteriorate, and how to manage it proactively is the discipline that separates traders who control their leverage from those who are controlled by it.

 

This article covers the mechanics of margin in detail: how it is set, what happens when it is breached, and how the frameworks built across the position sizing and correlation articles in this series translate to margin management in practice.

What Is Margin and How Is It Calculated?

Margin is expressed as a percentage of the notional value of a position. If the margin rate on an FTSE 100 index CFD is 5 per cent, opening a position with a notional value of £100,000 requires £5,000 of margin to be available in the account. That £5,000 is not a fee. It is a security deposit held by the broker until the position is closed.

 

The margin rate is set by the broker, within the bounds established by the regulator or issuer. In the UK, the FCA sets maximum leverage limits for retail clients across different asset classes whist the FSRA sets guidelines in the ADGM. For major index CFDs, the maximum leverage for retail clients is currently 20:1, implying a minimum margin rate of 5 per cent. For major currency pairs, it is 30:1, implying a minimum margin rate of approximately 3.3 per cent. For individual equity CFDs, the maximum leverage is 5:1, implying a minimum margin rate of 20 per cent. Commodities and crypto carry different limits.

 

Professional clients who meet the FCA’s or FSRA’s eligibility criteria may access higher leverage with correspondingly lower margin rates. The criteria and the implications of professional classification are covered in Article 19 of this series.

 

Two margin figures matter for an open position: the initial margin, which is the amount required to open the position, and the maintenance margin, which is the minimum amount required to keep it open. When the account equity falls below the maintenance margin level due to adverse price movement, the broker issues a margin call.

What Happens During a Margin Call

 

A margin call is the broker’s notification that the account no longer holds sufficient equity to cover the maintenance margin on open positions. It is a demand for additional funds or a requirement to reduce position size.

 

The sequence is as follows. A position moves adversely. The unrealised loss reduces the account equity below the maintenance margin threshold. The broker notifies the account holder. If additional funds are not deposited or positions are not reduced within the specified timeframe, the broker has the right to close positions automatically to bring the account back within the required margin level.

 

The positions closed in an automatic margin call are not necessarily the ones the trader would choose to close. The broker will close whatever is necessary to restore the margin requirement, typically starting with the largest loss-making position. A trader who has carefully constructed a portfolio with specific correlation and risk properties may find that positions closed by an automatic margin call leave a residual portfolio with risk characteristics that differ entirely from those intended.

 

This is one of the most practically damaging aspects of a margin call: it removes the trader’s control over the portfolio at the moment when that control is most needed. The remedy is to manage margin exposure before the call, not to respond to it after.

Why Margin Requirements Rise in Volatile Conditions

 

Margin rates are not fixed. They represent the broker’s or issuer’s assessment of the risk of the underlying instrument, and that assessment changes when market conditions change.

 

During periods of elevated volatility, brokers may increase margin requirements across affected instruments. The rationale is straightforward: when an instrument is moving by 3 per cent per day rather than 0.5 per cent, the risk of a position moving against the account by more than the initial margin between trading sessions increases substantially. A margin rate calibrated to normal volatility may no longer cover the realistic adverse move the broker must absorb if the account equity falls to zero.

 

When a broker increases margin requirements on an existing open position, the effect is immediate. An account that held sufficient margin under the previous rate may fall below the new requirement without any additional adverse price movement. A position with a notional value of £100,000 that required a £5,000 margin at a 5 per cent rate now requires £7,500 if the rate rises to 7.5 per cent. The £2,500 difference is drawn from the account’s free equity. If that free equity is insufficient, the account is in a margin call before the market has moved.

 

This is a specific risk that applies to accounts with margin utilisation close to full. It does not apply to accounts with substantial free equity that can absorb a rate increase without triggering the maintenance threshold. The margin buffer, the excess equity held above the minimum maintenance requirement, is the operational variable that determines how exposed an account is to automatic rate changes.

A Worked Example: How a Volatile Session Produces a Margin Call

 

Consider an account with the following structure on a Tuesday morning.

 

Account equity: £20,000. Open positions: long FTSE 100 index CFD, 20 contracts at £10 per point, at 8,000 points. Notional value: £1,600,000. Initial margin rate: 5 per cent. Margin required: £80,000.

 

At this point, the numbers do not work: a £20,000 account cannot hold £80,000 of margin. Let us use a realistic retail scale instead.

 

Account equity: £20,000. Open positions: long FTSE 100 index CFD, 2 contracts at £10 per point, at 8,000 points. Notional value: £160,000. Initial margin rate: 5 per cent. Margin required: £8,000. Free equity: £12,000.

 

That evening, a significant geopolitical event develops. When the market reopens, the FTSE opens 4 per cent lower, at approximately 7,680 points. The unrealised loss on the position is 320 points across 2 contracts at £10 per point, for a total of £6,400.

 

Account equity has fallen from £20,000 to £13,600. The broker has simultaneously increased the margin rate on FTSE 100 CFDs from 5 per cent to 8 per cent in response to elevated volatility. The margin now required on the position is £160,000 × 0.08 = £12,800.

 

The account holds £13,600 in equity. The maintenance margin threshold, typically set at 50 per cent of the initial margin, is £6,400. The account is technically above the maintenance threshold, but the free equity above the initial margin requirement is now only £800. A further adverse move of 80 FTSE points, approximately 1 per cent, will reduce free equity to zero and trigger automatic position closure.

 

Under normal conditions, the account had £12,000 of free equity. A single overnight event, combining an adverse price move and a margin rate increase, reduced that buffer to £800. The account moved from comfortable to precarious without the trader placing a single additional trade.

The Relationship Between Leverage and Margin Fragility

 

The closer an account runs to its maximum leverage, the more fragile its margin position is under adverse conditions. This is the most direct operational implication of the worked example above.

 

An account that uses 40 per cent of its available margin capacity under normal conditions has a substantial buffer to absorb both adverse price moves and rate increases before approaching the maintenance threshold. An account that uses 90 per cent of its available margin capacity has almost no buffer. A moderate adverse move or a routine rate increase in elevated conditions may be sufficient to trigger a call.

 

The position sizing framework in article 9 of this series addresses risk per trade as a percentage of account equity. Margin management requires a parallel discipline: a ceiling on total margin utilisation as a percentage of account equity. Running a leveraged account with margin utilisation consistently below 30 to 40 per cent of account equity provides meaningful insulation against the combination of adverse moves and rate increases that volatile conditions generate. Running consistently above 70 per cent creates structural fragility that a single bad session can expose.

 

The correlation framework in Article 11 compounds this. An account with multiple highly correlated positions, each individually within the margin limits, may have its combined margin exposure concentrated in a single directional risk. When that direction moves against it, all positions simultaneously incur unrealised losses, consume free equity, and face potential margin rate increases. The combined effect on the margin buffer can be substantially more severe than the sum of the individual positions would imply.

 

Practical Margin Management Disciplines

 

The following disciplines follow directly from the mechanics described above. They do not require additional tools or information. They require the habit of checking margin exposure before opening new positions rather than after adverse moves have already occurred.

 

Monitor free equity as the primary margin indicator. The margin utilisation percentage, the ratio of margin in use to total account equity, is the relevant number to track. Most platforms display this figure in real time. Before opening any new position, check whether it would bring total margin utilisation above the ceiling the account is designed to maintain.

 

Stress-test positions against a rate increase. Before placing any position intended to be held through a period of elevated volatility or a known risk event, calculate the margin required at a rate 50 per cent higher than the current rate. If the account cannot comfortably absorb that increase alongside the adverse price move implied by the stop-loss placement, the position is too large, or the account is too close to full utilisation.

 

Treat the margin call trigger as a hard stop. A margin call is not a signal to add funds under pressure. It is evidence that the risk framework was not applied correctly before the position was opened. The appropriate response to a margin call could be to reduce position size to restore the margin buffer, rather than deposit additional funds to maintain an oversized position.

 

Account for volatile session gap risk. As established in the articles on slippage and liquidity, positions held through weekend gaps or major event windows cannot be exited during those gaps or event windows. A margin position that is adequately buffered when the market closes may be in deficit when it reopens. For positions held through known gap risk events, either reducing size to accommodate a realistic adverse gap move or closing the position before the close is the risk-appropriate choice.

The Bottom Line

Margin is not an abstract technical requirement. It is the mechanism through which leverage becomes a liability when markets move against a position quickly. The conditions that generate the largest adverse moves are also those under which margin rates are most likely to rise, and margin buffers are most likely to be consumed simultaneously.

 

Managing margin proactively by maintaining meaningful free equity above the minimum requirement and stress-testing positions against rate increases before they occur is the practical extension of the position sizing and correlation disciplines outlined in the preceding articles in this series.

 

A margin call is not bad luck. It is the outcome of an account structured without sufficient buffer to absorb the combination of adverse price movement and rate volatility that stressed markets routinely produce. Building that buffer into the account structure before a crisis removes the need to manage it during a crisis.
